Tiramisu French Toast

Tiramisu French Toast – a simple sweet dessert worth a try. You won’t need a lot of preparation time and storage in the frigde is possible for a few days. So treat yourself to this delicious dish after a stressful day and enjoy a combination of flavors!

Introduction

I’ve stumbled across the idea of Tiramisu French Toast quite on accident.

I was craving tiramisu for a few days since I had bought mascarpone for another dessert I never made. However, none of the stores I visited had any lady fingers and I was too busy to take a guess a lot of supermarkets. I was thinking about making my own lady fingers but because of my strict schedule I gave up that thought.

This is when it occured to me that I could just make some french toast since I had a lot of leftover bread. However, chocolate-cinnamon-coffe french toast on its own sounded kinda bland. Which is why this Italian blogger helped me to also use up my mascarpone cream. I’ve changed up her recipe a bit but feel free to give her a visit and follow her instructions!

Be careful with mixing the cream – if you miss the right ratio or overbeat it, it might get flaky. The same thing happend to me the first time I made this dish, as well as spreading the cream too early on my warm bread slices which is why I ended up with puddles of mascarpone on my plate.

If you avoid my mistakes though, you should get a nice and delicious quick dessert in no time!

A quick glance at ingredients and tools

This one is a quick and easy recipe – depending on how long you want to soak your bread into the mixture.

Whisk an egg, milk, coffee, cocoa and sugar together while avoiding clumps and aiming for a nice homogeneous mixture. Soak in the bread. If you want to soak the slices longer, put it into a sealable container into the fridge and give it a few hours. If you do that, you can even use up your leftover dried out bread. However, for a quick snack, put in fresh slices of bread for a short amount of time.

If soaked long enough, heat up a pan and add enough butter to fry the bread but not drown it in butter. Put in the slices and fry until crispy and golden-brown. Take the slices out onto a kitchen paper to remove excess butter.

Prepare the mascarpone cream with mixing the cream and sugar. Be careful not to overmix it to avoid making butter. Now carefully add the mascarpone and mix until a smooth texture appears.

Spread the cream on top of the cooled down bread and stack two of them on top of each other. Decorate with fruits, honey or maple syrup.

What you can change

  • Add whole fruits or blend them into the cream to get a more fruity flavor!
  • Want it sweeter or less sweet? Vary with the amount of sugar you’re adding
  • A small shot of Amaretto or Grappa might enhance the flavor – be careful with adding not too much alcohol though
  • Depending on your preference, you can use strong brewed espresso or instant coffee powder

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bread

  • 200 ml milk

  • 1 egg

  • 50 ml coffee

  • Cocoa powder

  • Sugar

  • Cinnamon

  • 400 mg mascarpone

  • 400 ml whipped cream

  • 1 pck. Vanilla sugar

Directions

  • Mix the milk with the egg, the cocoa and the coffee. Add some sugar and cinnamon. Do not leave any clumps - warming up the milk before might help. Put the bread into the mixture. Depending on how old the slices are, let it soak for a few minutes to a couple of hours.

  • Heat up a pan and add butter. Fry the soaked bread slices until crispy and brown. Put on a paper towel to cool down.

  • Mix the whipped cream with vanilla sugar. Whip the cream until fluffy.  Whisk in the mascarpone until you get a smooth texture.

  • As soon as the slices of bread have cooled down, add a layer of the mascarpone cream and put another slice on top of it. Top it off again with the cream.

  • If you want, decorate it with pomegrenade, fruits, honey or syrup. Serve and enjoy!
